  • What is the Institute Pierre Mendès France?

The Institute Pierre Mendès France is an association formed under the law of July 1st 1901 governing non-profit associations. It was created in 1985 by Marie-Claire Mendès France. It’s President Eric Roussel supervises ongoing operations. Its general administrator is Tristan Mendès France.
Its archivist is Mr. Vincent Laniol.

The objectives of the Institute
The foremost objective of the Institute Pierre Mendès France is the collection and classification of archives and other documents concerning the life, the work and the political throught of Pierre Mendès France. These documents are fundamental for the political and economic history of France and contemporary world. The files relating to the decolonization of Indochina, India, Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria, to the challenges faced in the formation of the European Community, and to the economic and monetary problems of the postwar era offer invaluable information to historians.
The Institute, which is forming a specialized library, aids introducing and furthering research for students and graduate students studying the life and work of Pierre Mendès France.
It organizes expositions, conferences, debates and seminars connected with Pierre Mendès France and contemporary politics.
Books by and about Pierre Mendès France are available for purchase and also cassette tapes of his “Causeries du samedi”.

Joining the Institute
Entry to the Institute is open to the public without special authorization. Membership is available for those interested in the Institute and its activities for an annual fee of 50€, or 10€ for students.
All donations are gratefully appreciated, either in the form of financial contributions, or in the form of books and documents pertaining to Pierre Mendès France and the politics of France from the 1930s.
We will be especially grateful to anyone who contributes original works, copies, or any information enabling us to locate new documents concerning Pierre Mendès France, his circle of contacts and the political life of this time, so that we may enrich our collections.

The Archives of the Institute Pierre Mendès France
The Institute has 180 audio cassettes and 32 video cassettes of or about Pierre Mendès France. They can be listened to or seen at the Institute.
The personal library of Pierre Mendès France can be consulted as well as other works about Pierre Mendès France and contemporary politics (3, 500 references).
The Institute Pierre Mendès France has above all 650 files of archives and press clippings, which for the most part can be consulted for research without special authorization. Only a few are completely or partially restricted by French law (especially those pertaining to French national defense).
The press collections about Pierre Mendès France consist of 67 files accessible in the general reading room, along with three other volumes about his trip to the United States in 1954.
The letters of Pierre Mendès France can also be consulted, their classification is by alphabetical order (178 files). The period from 1961-1982 is organized by chronological order (41 files).
